sandy, the damage brought on by the storm is giving one industry a boost. captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning, one of america's highest ranking military leaders has been caught up in the investigation that led to the resignation of cia director david petraeus. general john allen is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan. allen is under investigation by the pentagon for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelly. she's the tampa, florida, woman, who is said to have received threatening e-mails from petraeus's mistress. a pentagon official says allen and kelly exchanged up to 30,000 communications between 2010 and 2012. it's unclear if they were involved in sexual matters or classified information. allen will remain the u.s. commander in afghanistan for now. but these latest developments only serve to widen the scandal that has gripped the nation's capital since friday. tara mergener is in washington with more. what's the latest there? >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. another twist in this drama. de

sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news." good evening, everyone, i'm jeff glor, two days after the abrupt resignation of cia director david petraeus more details are emerging about the chain of events that lead to his departure. we begin tonight with bob orr in washington. >> good luck, sir. >> reporter: sources say the down fall of c.i.a. director david petraeus was rooted in jealousy. the f.b.i., uncovered evidence of an affair between petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell after she sent harassing messages to another woman who broadwell thought was too close to petraeus. source have identified the second woman as 37-year-old jill kelley of the tampa area. cbs news has been told kelley is a civilian who does work for the u.s. central command. petraeus headed the central command from late 2008 to mid 2010. and during that time presented kelley and her husband an award for raising money to pay for junior enlisted men and women to attend military balls. petraeus has told friends that he had no romantic involvement with kelley. and only saw her when she was with her husband.

said "it's over. he's not coming back." captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. late today president obama accepted the resignation of the director of central intelligence, david petraeus. petraeus acknowledged having an extramarital affair. we have learned that for the last few months the f.b.i. has been investigating the communications of petraeus. law enforcement sources tell bob orr there was concern about e-mails that the c.i.a. director was exchanging with a woman who is a journalist. additional sources tell us those communications involved paula broadwell, seen here with petraeus on a department plane. broadwell, 39 years old, published a book last year on petraeus' time as the general in charge in afghanistan. broadwell is a harvard university research associate and she spent time in afghanistan with petraeus. she is a west point graduate, as is petraeus. we have tried to reach broadwell today but we have not heard back. before this sudden development, it would have been hard to find edyone in washington admire

up. >>> a wild chase ends with injuries and an arrest. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco where the chp caught up with a suspected drunk driver. cate. >> reporter: michelle, yes, this is where it all ended. chp wasn't able to confirm all the details. but again what we can show you is that this chase ended in such a big mess. the traffic lights are out here at the intersection of 71th street and south van ness. a cyclist and multiple cars were involved but again, chp would not confirm that information. but what we do know is that officers tried to stop a driver in the mission district right around 2:00 this morning. the driver tried to flee from officers and then they say some sort of collision happened and that's when the officers arrested the driver and found out that that driver was under the influence of alcohol. now, back out live, we see that city workers are again trying to do a lot of clean-up this morning here and try to restore those traffic lights in the area. a lot of debris and mess left behind and we saw one vehicle also in this area that has a dent

. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in vallejo now with the investigation this morning. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is just beginning here at the village bar. this is on tuolumne street in vallejo. you can see inside of the bar not a whole lot of damage to the building. several items are singed. there is some water damage. this is where the investigation is focused this morning. this was though the second fire within about a six-hour period overnight within two blocks. i want to show you some pictures of this fire. a little earlier this broke out at 2:45 at the village bar. and police have called this fire suspicious. they don't know the cause yet. well, two blocks away, there was a house fire at 8:00 last night. that was on alabama street. now, no one was home at the time. so nobody was injured. and firefighters were able to get that out once neighbors alerted them to that fire. but that fire is also suspicious. firefighters don't know the cause of either of these fires. but again, investigations are under way right now at both of those scenes. live in vallejo, anne

streets of a neighborhood near hillside park. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in daly city where an aging pipe is apparently blamed for the problem. >> reporter: michelle, you are correct. and city officials say that they are going to work to restore or repair that pipe and they actually admit there could be more in this area. but let's focus on the clean-up right now. last night's cleaning efforts weren't successful in this daly city neighborhood. the water main burst brought about inches of mud down on the road. here's a look from our cbs 5 chopper. neighbors were startled at 4:30 a.m. when police told them to leave their homes. 45,000 gallons of water came downhill. city leaders say it was because of a cast iron pipe made in the 1930s. >> you can see the pipe actually sheared off. we have an aging system. we know that we have pipes in the ground that are probably, you know, close or past their useful life. that's not uncommon within any community within the bay area. >> reporter: no homes were damaged. about 12 families were told to leave. some cars were swallowed up in the muck. city

this morning, a suspected drunk driver arrested but not until after a wild overnight chase. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco's mission district at one of the crime scenes related to this point,. >> reporter: i want to show you now this is one of the cars involved in that chase that that driver hit one of two parked cars tulip. here's the surprising detail about that driver. this is her fourth dui in the past 10 years. take a look at some video from the scene earlier. i'll walk you through. the suspect drove on to a closed on-ramp to westbound 80. a chp tried to pull her over. then she exited on mission and van ness and the chase began. she led officers through small streets in the mission and in that short time she hit one car that rolled forward and hit a cyclist. that cyclist was taken to san francisco general hospital is expected to be okay. but after that she continued on to hit another parked car that one we showed you when we first were here at the beginning of our shot before hitting another light pole at 17th and van ness knocking out the traffic lights in this area whic
